Dr. Travis N. Rieder is the Assistant Director for Education Initiatives, Director of the Master of Bioethics degree program, and Research Scholar at Johns Hopkins University’s Berman Institute of Bioethics. He has published widely on a variety of topics in philosophy and ethics. Rieder became interested in the ethics of opioid use and pain management after personally experiencing dependence on oxycodone. His first article on the topic, in the journal Health Affairs, was one of the most-read essays in 2017 and was excerpted by the Washington Post. He has written and spoken extensively on the topic for both scholarly and general audiences and has recently published a book about his experience: In Pain: A Bioethicist’s Personal Struggle with Opioids.
